On having a website

here is my relation to the internet ~ ~ ~

I love the internet, it's a magical place full of incredible free technology with limitless potential. I still think it is one of the most utopian technologies we've ever created.

Sadly, it was taken over by a bunch of rich meanies who mostly just want to sell things. This is super lame and I think we should try our best to ignore them.

Like most people, I was a social media user. It mattered to me for a long while. But before that time, I was a huge nerd with a blog where I wrote about programming video games. I knew a bunch of other people with blogs, and we were all posting our blog posts on forums.

Then came Facebook, Instagram, the death of Google Reader, and the independent internet suffered a dark age of hegemony. Honestly, I can't believe we let those losers run shit for so long.

Anyway, the dark age is over, at least for me. I have seen the light, the dawn of a new independent internet renaissance, and I've decided to put more effort into this website (which has mostly just served as a landing page for the last 10 years). My only regret is not doing so sooner.

how it is done

Everyone should have a personal website. It's awesome. I can do whatever I want here.

Websites don't have to be fancy. In fact, I think the fancier a website is, the more likely someone is trying to get you to buy something you don't need.

This site runs on Zola and Netlify, which I can recommend to anyone that knows basic HTML & CSS and can use a terminal.

For everyone else, sadly they discontinued Microsoft FrontPage. But luckily, there is ChatGPT which will teach you anything if you ask it nicely. Try this prompt:

Hello Mr. Chat, I would like to make a personal website in the tradition of the pioneers of the early 2000s, but I don't know the first thing about it. Could you please write a tutorial for me? Please talk like a cowboy to make me feel more comfortable as I embark on this new adventure.

The last sentence is very important.
